Email

I have a number of email accounts at zulq.net, GMail and some other domains that I used to access via multiple accounts in Thunderbird. I would access these accounts from my laptop and desktop using POP. For spam filtering I would use Thunderbird’s built-in adaptive controls. This was OK until:

* The volume of spam getting through increased dramatically
* I got an Android phone and wanted access to all my email from it

I decided that I’d kill two birds with one stone and setup all my email to come through GMail and after a lot of trial and error, I think I’ve got a set-up which meets these requirements:

1. GMail spam filtering on all accounts
2. There should be no delay on my primary email account (zulq.net)
3. All email is available from all my devices
4. Bulk email is not synchronized onto my phone
5. Recieving email on my desktop or laptop should stop it being delivered to my phone
6. Desktop and laptop should receive all the same emails

To achieve this, I had to first move my zulq.net email service to Google hosting so that I could send and recieve email through the GMail spam filter without any delay - (1) and (2). I then used GMail’s multiple account feature to suck up emails from my other accounts - (1). Then I configured each device to access that single account - (3).

To stop bulk email from being delivered to my phone required adding some GMail filters that match the mailing lists and archive the emails immediately. By default, my phone does not synchronise archive emails - (4).

For (5), I had to modify GMail’s POP settings so that when emails are accessed using POP they are archived and therefore not synchronized with my phone. After doing so, I noticed emails were either being delivered to my desktop OR laptop which contradicts (6). To remedy this, I discovered here that if you prefix your username with “recent:” you receive ALL recent emails.

While doing all of this, I found this Thunderbird add-on useful to clean duplicate emails up after I made a mistake.

Silvery Toned BW Preset

shu-danils-wedding-0997Here’s another example of fixing bad photos for very pleasing results. This photo originally had two problems. It was composed terribly and the highlights were blown. After cropping (almost half!) I tried to recover the highlights but to no avail. I then tried a few presets and the Silvery Toned BW Preset I got from Karin Knowland worked very well.

Shu & Danil’s Wedding

shu-danils-wedding-0989On the weekend I had the pleasure of attending Shu & Danil’s wedding. I had a lot of fun with the camera and got some very good shots. I know I’ve included too many poor shots in the final set but I’ll save being ruthless for a strangers wedding.

I took three lenses - 85, 50 and 28mm. I only really used the 85 and 50. I know a zoom would have been easier but these are very nice lenses and I suspect a comparative zoom would be too expensive right now.

As usual I’ve mucked about significantly with the bad photos, sometimes with very pleasing results as you can see here. You can see the rest on Flickr and the gallery when I’ve made it work better.

Bathtub IV

Here’s a gorgeous tilt-shift video by Keith Loutit. I understand what’s happening in tilt-shift but I don’t fully understand WHY that makes things look miniature. Is it that our brains are used to interpreting things with very shallow depth of field as close?

After the Storm

c81a062fb3After the Storm is an excellent phtographic essay by Chris Bickford. As I’ve said before, I don’t want to blog about everything I come accross but I felt the need to point this one out. I spend a lot of time looking at photo’s online, either in an RSS view or via thumbnails. I really enjoyed this essay not only for the excellent photography but also also for it’s apt presentation. Especially so with digital photography, presentation is overlooked. Sure, a photoblog may look nice and the photos may be on a neutral or complimentary background but there’s more to it than that. I’m not saying I posses any of the skills required but I can appreciate it when I see it - or rather experience it.

Whale

This is a friend’s JPG that I’ve gone to town on with Lightroom. It clearly looks enhanced and could definitely be done better but even so, I’m stunned at what you can do in a few clicks. Changes include  white balance, crop, darkening, increased clarity, saturation (blue in particular) and a few more tone tweaks.  It’s taken me longer to create this blog post than make those changes.

Lightroom Presets

85mm-house-0778I’ve been playing around with some lightroom presets I found. This one is supposed to simulate Velvia film. Not sure it does that but I like it none the less. I got it and others at www.lightroompresets.com. In case you’re interested, this is Velvia 2 with shadow tones lifted.

85mm House

85mm-house-0772My new 85mm F1.8 lens arrived today. Did a few test shots around the house and am very pleased. Although I’ve not used it in anger, the longer reach seems to feel more natural. Even got a few interesting shots while mucking about. More in the gallery or on Flickr.

South Kensington

south-kensington-0672I took these around South Kensington after a visiting Wildlife Photographer of the Year. It was a thoroughly unsatisfying shoot and I’ve had to work these considerably to make anything barely interesting. In particular I’ve been using the crop tool. In some cases I’ve simply gone for a square and there’s little to glean from that except that sometimes a a square is nice. In other cases, I’ve had to do something far more extreme and as always the lessons are get close, get intimate and THINK about the composition. One positive, is that there are a couple of shots of strangers. Yay! More in the gallery, Flickr or Facebook.

Going Bananas

banana-0686I was a bit bored so I had a look around and found these elderly bananas. I found the composition quite challenging as you’re having to do two things: position the bananas and the camera. I didn’t start with a vision. I only wanted to capture some of the interesting patterns and colours. Unfortunately, this shoot ended prematurely when I ate the subject. A few more in the gallery, Flickr or Facebok.
